Unit 03 ideas and concepts in art and design.

p8690_v_v8_aa

The first thing notice is about this poster is the large grinning somewhat frightening  face of this poster. this is due to the fact that the eyes of this face are located in the most commonly focused on section of an image this is a good characteristic as this presents the audience with presumably the main characters of this film. as well as this i also admire the way that this picture stands out so dramatically while sharing the same colour scheme with the majority of the background of this piece.
the second portion of this poster that stands out to its viewer is the large orange and yellow informal title of which has the first and last character of this poster stretching downwards along the top positron of this poster.
this characteristic best explains the contents of this film due to the resemblance that the first and last characters of this text have with the long teeth of the monster on the front of this poster.
the final area of interest is the house that occupies the bottom of this poster of which presents its viewer with one window that a silhouette stands in. suggesting to its viewer that this is the person who the monster of this poster is focusing on.

p10884_v_v8_aa
This poster is successful due to firstly the artists well excited use of the rule of thirds of which successfully attracts the viewers attention straight to the middle section of this poster where the main focal point of this poster is that being the large clown noise that protrudes from the face of the ghoulish clown  . This fact may be due to the size of the nose and the clear contrast of which occurs between the dark redness of the nose and the blue and white colours of which make up the face of the clown. i believe that the creator of this poster has chosen to make this his main focal point to indicate to its viewers that the clown of this poster is the main character of this film this film. As well as this i suspect the creator of crating the noise of this clown at this magnitude was an act of calling the viewers attention towards the only clear and threatening aspects of horror in this poster of which is the crooked and distorted mouth and eyes of this clown. The second focal point section of this poster is the very pointed red and white outlined tile that reads killer klowns. the pointed styling of this typeface caused the text to look threatening ,sharp and hazardous an effect that i amuse that the creator has done as to translate that the killer clowns that this text is referring are also hazards and posses sharp characteristics or objects of which are threatening this section also presents its viewer with a separate blue and different style of text that reads from outer space of which characters vary in size being very large at both ends of the title to gradually getting smaller towards the centre. I believe that the artist has done this as to stress the unorthodox origin of these clowns. the third and final section of which the viewer focuses on is the bottom section of this poster where the text that reads in space no one can eat ice cream is located. the composition of this text has been done n such a way that it appears to be showing over the heads of a young couple. this is due to the arced form of the sentence and the variation in size that starts rather small and gradually getting larger as the text reads from the left side over to the right side of the poster. the red white ,blue and yellow colours of this poster cause enhance the effectiveness of this poster as these are all colours of which are most commonly thought to belong to clowns.
return-of-the-living-dead-2-movie-poster-1988-1010270323
This poster is a successful comedy horror poster firstly because of the way i admirer the cartoon and imaginative qualities of this poster and also because of the artists well executed use of the rule of thirds of which draws the attention of its viewer to the centre section towards the main focal point of this image of which i believe to be the eyes of the cloud skull of this poster a feature i believe is due to the fact that the location of the eyes of the skull of this poster happen to be in the most commonly focused on portion of a image as this is where the eyes of a person would be located if the image were to be a life sized human face.
the second aria of focused is the bottom half of this poster where the title reads return of the living dead part 2 this text has been fashioned in a slightly elongated, bright red and chunky text . this text is successful in my opinion as i feel that the red colour contrasts well with the very dark ,black graves at the bottom of this piece. as well as this i also feel that it best explains the title as colour red is intrinsically linked to the idea of blood and the fact that blood is also strongly linked to the idea of death works well. also the inconsistent size variation of this text, the sharp aspects and the dripping blood style of the text that reads part 2 cause the over all look to appear as being mildly threatening.
old style
This image is a good example of the successful use of the rule of thirds by first attracting the eye towards the top half of this image a characteristic that only exists due to the brightness of the light from the helmet of which the figure at the top of this poster is wearing i believe that with out the strong contrast of this light the main focal point would be what is now the second focal point ,that being the word barn written in red bold writing at the base of this poster. i believe that the creator of this poster has fashioned the main focal point in the form of the monsters of this movie to stress to the audience the importance of these characters in this film showing that these monsters are the main focal point to this movie
the third area of focus is the image is the crowd of people having a campfire in front of a barn that is on fire.
the artists chosen colour seine presents its audience with mid night colours of black blue and grey like colours combined with reds ,purples ,oranges and yellows all colours that could be associated with fire i believe that the artist has done this to emphasising the campfire sen of this image as to strongly suggest to its viewer that the people around this campfire might be telling ghost stories.
jaws
This poster if effective due to its well executed use of the rule of thirds of which guides the human eye downwards along the page, first attracting the attention of its viewer to the large bold red title of which reads the word jaws. This is a good quality to re create due to the fact that buy doing this the viewer is getting the most important piece of information first without being distracted by the rest of the poster of which effectively doesn’t stand out as much as the title due to the majority of this image shearing one colour scheme of blue, white and black .
following the rule of thirds my eye is then drawn to the image of the swimming woman this is because of how close it is towards the title and even tho the names of the actors are some what closer to the title i believe that the woman is more prominent due to the way in which her arm is reaching out almost underlining the text and due to important information usually having a underlining to stress importance the woman and the word jaws almost become one image.
after the image of the woman has drawn my attention down the page my eyes then reads the text of which are again almost underlining the woman. following this instigated flow my eye then follows to observe the shark at the bottom of the poster a image that even tho is rather large and alarming is one that does not over power the smaller imagery as it is included in this blue white and black back ground colour scheme.
invisable man
From my perspective this poster is successful firstly due to its cartoon like styling as i believe that this quality has caused this piece to be more attention grabbing as it has allowed the artist to cause a more dramatic contrast using a simple colour scheme apposed to if it were created in this same way but while using realistic imagery as i suspect that this would cause its simple colour scheme and successful contrast glow like effect to be not as prominent i have also chosen this particular poster due to its well executed use of the rule of thirds of which first draws the attention of its viewer to the goggle covered eyes of the character in this image i believe that this is firstly because this section of a poster in the rule of thirds is well known to be the most commonly focused on aria of a poster or image , this is due to the fact that a person is firstly drawn to the eyes of the human face.i suspect that this fact influenced the artist of this piece to place the eye area of the face of this male in this specific section. but most importantly i believe that the reason that the artist has made the covered over eyes of this piece the main focal point due to this movie being biased on the fact that people can not “see” the man in this movie this interpretation is supported due to the ways in which this character is covered up thus only making the swaddling items of the exterior viable while the true character remains unseen . As well as this the artists use of the rule of thirds secondly draws its viewers attention to the very bold and rather large and slightly diagonal title of this poster that reads the invisible man in quotation marks. i believe that the effect of the quotation marks of this title has is that while its viewer is reading the title the verbalisation in which people read to them self in becomes magnified as it amplifies the voice of the mind. i will look to re crate this in my posters as i believe that this is a interesting and unique effect of a title. finally my eye is then caught by the smaller orange text at the very top of this poster i think that this text even tho is in the same styling of the title of this poster stands out less due to its size being significantly smaller.
TSA_2203384_2015-17-4--01-03-59
This poster is admirable firstly due to its well executed main focal point of which is firstly the word evil that is written in the largest font that is in yellow and orange of which slightly resembles a dry dusty mud like colour of a dirt path or road this resemblance explains the location in which the happenings of this film occur taking place in a fores. the second focal point of this poster are the main characters of this film tucker and dale of whom are presented to its audience wearing a very confused and shocked facial expression a characteristic that effectively suggesting  to the viewer that these two characters dominantly express these particular emotions all through out the film.
the final section of which the viewers attention is then guided to is the silhouettes of which are surrounded by the very light blue moon and the image of the teenage girl behind the two main characters of which effectively explain to its viewer the alternate personalities in which the teenagers in this film project on to the main characters tucker and dale just as the shadows are projected on to the moon. i will look to re create this symbolism.
blade_runner_poster_by_adamrabalais-d4av5bo.jpg
This poster is a grate example of the effects that white space can have on a image the white space of this image can be seen in the tessellated black and grey back ground of this image of which successfully frames the main focal point that is the bright orange centred eye of this image. i believe that the styling of this eye explains the text above this image well as the bright striking orange colour i feel best explains the concept of the word bold . however even tho this text may be closest to the main focal point it is not seen before the dark red title. This is because of how well the red in this title contrasts against the almost black section of the background that it is delayed in front of causing the text at the very top to be viewed last. further more i suspect that another reason for the artist of this poster having styled the eye in this piece in this striking fashion was to suggest to its audience that this film will spark your interest. I also admire the way in which the text at the top of this image is the same shad of light grey that surrounds and highlights the outer ring of the eye causing a glow like effect as this creates the idea that the text above ,may also be apart of this glow.
horror typeography.jpg
Here is a page full of typefaces that i find inspirational , i will look to re-create the pointed, sharp styling of these posters as i believe this quality to translate as being threatening. i also plan of re creating there monochromatic colour schemes as i feel that this feature allows the information to be prepossessed faster as the audience is not distracted by varied colour scheme.
z text development test
These are just some of the early type face development of which i have designed the first type face i created was the typography of which i had designed as to look like it had been bitten by zombies ,i think that the colour scheme of this typeface was successful but the over all look was much to detailed making it look to crowded and believed that this would take attention away from the other components in my final piece.  i then went on to creating the bright red text of which i have incorporated  imagery of hands protruding from the z, even though i thought this design to be imaginative and fitting with the plot of the film i believed this type face to be ineffective as visually it is to thin and is not bold enough for a poster,is to technique and did not resemble Saul Basses works well enough. The third typeface i made was the bright yellow and black light up text of which i had fashioned to resemble the text of a fair ground sign, from my perspective this text is eye catching as well reflects the fair ground setting of the end of this film and will look to incorporate this in future development but will attempt to simplify the over all design. the final text i created was the thin red pointed style title, i believed this text to be simple and almost threatening looking as to how pointed the ends of the characters were a characteristic i thought well reflected the constant threat of zombies they face along there journey however again this design was not bold enough and even though the styling loser resembled Saul Basses typeface was not close enough. in convolution i will look to simplify and make my future typography designs bolder and better resemble the works of Saul Bass.
saul bass hitch.jpg
I admire this typography crated by Saul bass this is because of the regularity in size and the surprising way it stands out and captures the viewers attention even tho this text is rather thin. i will look to re-create these traits in the titles of my film.
hitchj inspiers
I feel that i have successfully crated a type face that highly resembles the Hitchcock typeface above this piece designed by Saul bass, i have done this by re creating his irregular sizing and by slightly changing the face of each character, i have also re-created his basic colour scheme of red and black. in my opinion this type face is very eye catching and aesthetically pleasing and because of these reasons i intend to use this typeface in one of my final posters.
five objectys
In this image you will see five objects of which i believe all intrinsically link to my chosen film that being zombie land i have chosen a image of the car of which the characters take there gurney as i believe that this is important as the majority of the mid section of this film takes place either in this car  or in relevance to it , as well as this one of the most iconic seance  of this film happen through the use of this car as one of the main characters manages to decapitate a zombie with the car door of this vehicle. This page also includes an image of a advertising arrow as to translate to my audience the main plot of this film that being the two main characters being held hostage by two females and take a directed journey to a fair.  The third image seen is a picture of the very well known shoot a duck game of which is most commonly played at carnival or fairs and i have used this picture to explain the destination on this film to my audience. on this page i have used zombie silhouettes due to the fact that this film takes place in a zombie apocalypses. finally i have chosen this image of a fairest wheel because approaching a fair this is usually the ride that is visible first due to its size and successive lights
44576994_911523239044387_2357427636612890624_n
This is a photograph of my various designs for this project in the first design i have presented my audience with what will be a brightly light grand style title of which i hope will catch the attention of my audience , i have also integrated a design of a fairest wheel and some zombie silhouettes  of which will make reference towards both zombies and the shoot a duck game. this design will have a rectangular boarder and will have fair lights displayed in every corner. the second design in this image i have retracted the detail of the title now replacing it with a much simpler rounded rectangular style of typography ,i have also re-positioned the fairest wheel towards the right hand of this design of which  has many lines extending from the exterior as to explain the excessive lights of this ride of which are attracting the attention of the running zombie silhouettes at the very bottom of this design. this design will have a top border of which will look like a red curtain and will also display fair lights that extend across the top of the page  my third design shows another thin typeface and what will be a brightly light hand of which is directing the audience to the right hand side of this page of where a fairest wheel sits at the bottom right hand side of this poster design, this fairest wheel shows images of zombies reaching from the individual carriage  towards the stranded couple on this ride in  this design i have chosen to keep the fair light border. if you will acknowledge the fact that in this  forth idea i have presented my audience with a title that has zombie hands Incorporated in to is typeface a choice i have done to explain the zombie orientated challenges and obstacles the characters battle through out this film, i have also used a image of what will be a brightly light chain saw in this design to make reference towards the weaponry that is used to fight these obstacles. the various triangles that travel across the top of this poster i have added in hopes that they will be interpenetrated as festive flags that are rather commonly seen at fairs. The fifth design in this image has been designed inspired by Saul bass’s supernatural car poster and his blues brothers piece. This image shows a car with the cow boy hat and the blue collar displayed in the window of this vehicle of which has one open door that is supposed to look as tho it is threatening the well being of the two zombies placed directly in front of. the thin text of this potential poster design as also been designed inspired by the how to survival guide in this film. Finally the last design idea shows an image of a zombie bitten hand pointing to the right hand side of this piece while having a fairest whee extending from the thumb and the extended finger of this poster reads the title.
44668868_438807923315012_5001740186447511552_n.jpg
In the first design idea i have presented my audience with the very basic fetchers of a clown of which i have also caused to look zombie like by daring these fetchers spilling with what will be blood the title of this poster is suppose to resemble fair ground lights and all of this imagery will be placed in a blood like frame. The second poster design in this picture i have again presented my audience with the basic facial fetchers of a clown however i have not included the hair of the clown as i felt that the hair retracted attention away from the actual fetchers of the clowns face and felt that this absence translated the idea of a clown faster and in a simpler way, i have also designed the type face of this poster travailing downwards across the poster as i believe this design causes this poster to look original and attracts the attention of a audience better. in this third design i have framed the face of the clown with what will be a black or green border as to better frame these facial fetchers and i have again designed the title separately  appearing at the top and bottom of this poster to make the most of the space i have been given and the small circles that make up this text will resemble fair ground lights. The fourth image in this photo i have designed the car pf this film having the door open of which has blood dripping from it as to make reference towards a very iconic scene in this film i have also framed this design with a blood like frame and i have also designed the typeface of this design inspired by that how to guide that the main character makes reference to through out this film. This fifth idea tells of the main characters car about to travel in to a tunnel while having a zombie in the back window of the car and again i have designed the title of this poster from the how to guide in this film. the final image i have used the idea of the car again but this time i have only  used half of the car as i  was attempting to used less imagery while still efficiently translating a concept to my audience , i feel this has worked, i have also included a image o a decapitated zombie that lays in a pool of blood.
44676678_2023067991083496_3987113557870247936_n.jpg
All of the images in this piece have been designed inspired by one of the most common scenes in this movie that being the part when one of the main characters within this film kills a zombie that is beside the road by opening his car door. This first idea of which is in this photo i have designed the main characters car having the door open  of which is dripping with blood while driving along a road while also including a image of a decapitated zombie of which is lying in a pool of its own blood i have also designed the title of this poster inspired by the main characters  how to guide.  The second design in this image i have already designed ones before but in this design i have tried to refine up this idea and feel that by doing this causes this design to be more appealing and this may cause me to re create this design in illustrator. for this third idea in this photo i have designed the car that they take a road trip in, in this film  delaying a cow boy hat that the second main character wears and also the blue colour from the main characters shirt both of which these characters where through out the entire film. the final design in this image i have decided to draw the car at a different perspective while still including the image of a cow boy hat in the window. i believe that this has not proven to be as effective as i had hoped and do not believe that this design holds any potential.
44601968_254642958568028_2584746756507959296_n.jpg
I am very fond of this particular design as from my prescriptive it is very entreating and some what comical. i have presented my audience with a title of which is very simple a style choice i have done as to insure that the image of a zombie in the back of the main characters car becomes the main focal point of my poster.  in this poster design you will also see a faint text that reads rue 13 check the back seat that i intend to re-create resembling the typeface of the rules guide that the main character makes reference to through out the film.  It is this how to survive guide of which i have designed this poster as to make reference to this particular rule.i intend to keep the design of this poster as simple as possible as to re-create the art style of Saul bass. this poster will be one that i re-create in illustrator.
back of car and zombie
In this image you will see a grey and black car that has a zombie in the back window  of which is pressing its blood covered hands up against the window of the car in this design , I am not pleased with this particular outcome as i feel the components and the overall flow of this poster does not work as well as i would have hoped and due to this fact i will not be further developing this design.
44543174_243166999885412_3956757549360873472_n
I consider this design as being successful due to the strong reference i have made towards one of the most ionic happenings within this film that being the part where the second main character kills a zombie on the side of the road with his car door.  The title in this design has been drawn resembling the typeface used in the main characters how to guide, i plan to make the hash tag of this design very prominent. The truck of this film will resemble Saul basses car in his supernatural poster. The guide lines of this road will be crated in a very bright colour of which in theory will effectively contrast against the road and background.
zombie and car
This piece was very strongly designed inspired by the most iconic Sean of this film where the second main character kills a zombie on the road with his car door, i like this design as i believe that it explains this memorable scene well while using very simple imagery of which also well reflects Saul basses works and it is because of these reasons that i believe this design to be effective and will be developing this design further i will look to create a stronger contrast in colour and create more drama through excessive imagery of blood and detail.
zombie car rust and blood development.jpg
Here i have attempted to explain the most iconic scenes of this film through less imagery, i have done this by not including the picture of the hat of which the second main character of this film wears and also replacing  the picture of the zombies with a patch of blood that is dripping from the door. i feel that this is successful as the blood patch on the door well represents the death of the zombie. i prefer this design because even tho there is less imagery it still suggests that the door of this car has caused an injury .
HASH ZOMB
This typography has been created inspired by the type face of the how to survive a zombie apocalypses guide in this movie. and also the works of Saul bass. in my opinion the result of these two styles have been rather successful and this typography could potentially  be used  in a poster design. however if i were to use this typeface again i would have created it slightly wider in the hopes it would cause a bolder effect.
blood and rustt car final design
In my opinion this designs is the most successful piece to come out of the development for this particular idea as it is both simple and eye catching , uses limited imagery while still effectively explaining a scene from my chosen film as well as this i am very fond of the contrast that the orange has with the different Gray and red colours that make up the car in this design.
blood and rustt car final design FINISHED
This is an image of the final poster that all of this development had led up to, firstly i am pleased with the strong contrast in colour that i have crated in this poster using the colours black ,red ,orange, yellow and white. another reason i am content with this poster is due to the type face of  my typography of which i have crated in a rather wide and elongated style, i have done this as i believe that these styling choices compliment the portrait settings of this poster causing everything to look in better proportion, this also causes the title of this poster to become more eye catching as apposed to if the characters of this text were in a  more formal width and length
WITH HAT AND COLOUR
I like this design as i feel that i have well reflected the works of Saul bass doing so by designing this piece incorporating  both of his works firstly the simple but effective styling from the car in his supernatural poster and re-creating the idea of using individual items of clothing as to describe a charter from his blues brothers piece. i have done this by using the cowboy hat of which the second main character wears and the blue colour from the shirt that the main character wears in this poster.
car with blood outline zombie green white space.jpg
In my opinion this image is successful as it best reflects the styling of Saul bass as this design has no strong black outlines and has a very simple composition as well as this it also best describes the most iconic scenes  with in this film that being when the main character kills a zombie on the road with a car door.  i have outlined this design with this red plash like shape as to resemble blood while suggesting the violent content of this scene . even tho this design has positive visual aspects and descriptive qualities i will look to further develop this design and intend to re-create this design with more detail while using less imagery.
clown ands hair.jpg
I have chosen to re-create this design in illustrator as i feel that the composition of this poster design is appealing and the design is also very entreating i also plan on creating this poster with traditional clown colours such as red blues yellows and  orange.
DRIBBLEING CLOWN
I have also chosen this clown design as in my opinion it is one of the most visually appealing  and holds the most potential out of these two designs another reason i have chosen this design to re-create in illustrator is due to the fact in this design i have tried to use the very lets amount of imagery i possibly could while clearly translating the characteristics of a clown i have done this to replicate the minimalism that Saul bass uses in his designs.
Untitled-2
if you will acknowledged the diagonal way in which i have designed most of the characters , i have done as an attempt to complement the linear  design of this  typography , i feel that this has worked well causing a dramatically down scaling effect. i also believe this particular design would well complement a portrait styled poster.
Untitled-11
This is an image of my re-creation of the zombie clown of which the audience is presented with towards the end of this film. i feel that i have successfully translated the clown /zombie characteristics of  this clown through my clear dripping blood like shapes that i have incorporated in to the design of this face. i am happy with this initial design i also think that the way i have created the eyes of this zombie in this dull black way best translated the idea of this clown being dead.  intend to further develop this image .
Untitled-11
Here i have further developed my zombie clown design and i am happy with the colour scheme in which i have chosen showing blue, red, white, purple and pink. i have chosen these colours as i believe them to be present in a clowns makeup and costume. as well as this these colours contrast well with the red blood that is dripping from the mouth of this poster but not so much this allows the blood to integrate with the image of the clown better.
exported poster
my final poster will be inspired by the styling of this old fashioned carnival clown poster. i plan on doing as to best explain the destination in which they take in this film of which is a fair where one of the main characters run in to a zombie dressed up as a clown.
final clown zombie poster
In my opinion the positioning of the clown in this design is very ideal as this causes the design to act as the main focal point, i will look to re-create this in the further development of this poster. Another thing i will keep from this piece is the black border as i feel this best frames and exaggerates the clown in this picture, however will look to use more colours in this border and may thicken this aspect. however i do not think that the typeface of this poster is bold enough and does not merge well with the flow of this poster.
final clown zombie poster with spotted bak ground.jpg
I have designed this poster inspired by old fashioned carnival posters i believe that i have effectively done this by re-creating the border of these old posters and the glorification of the face of a clown while also incorporating a new aged twist by using a rather bold colour scheme and computer generated style. as well as this i have also attempted to mimic the styling of Saul bass of which i feel i have accomplished through my irregular and informal type face and simplistic imagery  that do not have black outlines, if you will acknowledged the ways in which i have used the rule of thirds that i first attract the attention of my audiences with the black eyes of the clown face of this poster as the main focal point, a characteristic of which i think exists through the strong contrast that the light purple and blue colour that surrounds the eyes of this poster has against the dull blackness of the clowns eyes. this then causes the viewer to examine the second focal point that being the rest of the clowns face this is because of the fact that the images of the clowns face are not connected  , once the viewer has done this i then call there attention towards my Saul bass inspired title of this poster that all the characters are presented in a informal and irregular fashion of which i have incorporated with the boarder of this poster.

FIVE ITEMS RESULT.jpg

44495384_180257202894632_772195275409195008_n
This is an image of a potential design of which may frame my title, in my opinion this design is successful as i believe it to be a creative way of fashioning the title of this poster as the main focal point. As well as this i believe that the typeface in this image well resembles the works of Saul bass as in my opinion it reflects his informal styling and irregularity. I plan on re-creating this design in illustrator and integrating it in to the further development of my posters.
HAND DESIGN STEPS
This piece explains the development of this directive hand, showing first the re-creation of my earlier pencil design of this hand. i was happy with this re-creation and decided  to further develop  this design a choice of which lead to the text that stretches across the protruding finger of  this hand of which reads the title of this poster, even tho i found this design adequate i still thought that it could improve so to do so i refined the characters of the title and introduced the idea of the fairest wheel of which i placed on the tip of the thumb i now believe this design to be eye catching and original so i will look to include this design in the  further development of my poster.

Untitled-6

zombie shoot a duck like targets.jpg
The zombies in this piece have been designed in this way to resemble the shoot a duck game of which is often played at carnivals or fairs these characteristics can be seen taking place in the targets of which i have placed upon the heads of these zombies best translating the well known fact that to kill a zombie you must shoot them in the head while also reflecting the objective of the original game. another resemblance i have created with this game is by insuring to use the yellow colour from the ducks in to the shadows of these zombies. if you will acknowledged the way in which i have intertwined both the shoot a duck game and the zombie silhouettes from my previous list of five things together a technique i feel has had a interesting outcome.
zombie land point in white could be the final one
I believe that i have successfully used the rule of thirds in this poster of which i first use to draw the viewers attention towards the middle section of this poster doing so by catching there eye with my well designed main focal point. which i have made in the form of a zombie bitten hand that displays the title of this film stretching across the finger of this design. In my opinion this is effective as by doing this i have managed to create the title of this film as the main focal point a fact that best expresses the importance of the title and helps add context towards the rest of the imagery in my poster. As well as this i have Incorporated this black rectangle of which can be seen behind the hand and across the middle section of this poster to add more definition and create strong contrast with the white of the hand and the red colours belonging to both the title and the wound of the hand. I then direct my audiences attention to the second half of my poster with the only image that differs  from what would have been a very dominantly red, black and yellow colour scheme by making this image using the colours blue , red, green ,yellow ,orange and purple. if you will acknowledged the red and black curtain like border within this poster of which i have placed yellow circles that have been designed as to resemble fare ground  lights.   The final section of this poster i have designed in the form of five zombie silhouettes that have been styled to resemble the shoot a duck carnival game. i think that i have successfully explains the title of this poster by making sure to heavily include the use of zombies.

finished zombie hand development # black back ground.jpg

Here i have slightly changed the style of this poster and have replaced the back  ground of this with a large square shape of black rather than the thin strip used in my earlier piece and if you will knowledge the change in colour of the fairest wheel that i have changed to white while also changing the entire colour of the hand to this zombie like green skin colour. I believe that these changes have caused the hand and the text to both act as the main focal point as apposed to my earlier poster as the title of this poster acts as the main foal point. As well as this in my opinion the new zombie colouring of the hand in this poster best describes the contents of this film.

old zombie land really simple

here i have tried a rather simplistic style as i felt that the various other posters of which i have designed were becoming over technical and as a result i have designed this poster using very limited imagery and colour however i feel that this image is to simple and rather vague and does not explain the contents of this movie as well as my other posters and feel this particular poster is better fitting for a book cover as apposed to a movie poster as this poster is not eye catching enough. due to this poster sharing the same imagery and not looking very appealing i will not develop this poster any further.

final poster
i have chosen this poster to be one of my final posters as in my opinion this is the most attention grabbing poster  this may be because of my dominant use of this striking red colour of which i have contrasted against the black colour  images in this poster. i think this poster is possess the most original composition compared to the various other posters that i have designed. As well as this i think that the way in which i have designed the facial expression of the clown in this poster sets a ominous mood a characteristic that is missing from the other posters.
blood and rustt car final design FINISHED.jpg
I have chosen this last poster as one of my final pieces as i feel that i have created a design that explains the contents of the movie very well this is because of the act that the image of the car has been designed to make reference to one of the most iconic scenes from this movie, and so would be well recognised without the title of this poster ,also  I feel that this poster is attention grabbing and original . Another reason that i believe this poster to be successful is due to the styling of my text of which i have designed in this wide and elongated way, i have done this because from my perspective the way i have elongating my text complements the portrait setting of this poster. As well as this i have also chosen to create this type face this thin as i feel that this particular trait  causes this typeface to resemble Saul bass’s typography , purposely resembling his Hitchcock typeface.  I am proud of my use of the rule of thirds of which i have used to fashion the car in this poster as the main focal point a fact that i have created by designing this car having many colours which contract well against each others those colours being grey ,orange ,yellow, red and white. My main focal point is located in the centre portion of this poster because i felt that this fact supported the idea of this image being the most important image and this positioning  caused the individual images of this poster to look in better proportion and the spacing between the title and the main focal point allows my viewer to analyse the details of both designs faster and clearer as opposed to if my main focal point were a lot closer to the title . i have designated my second focal point to the title of this image doing so by again first attracting my viewers attention with contrasting colours but i believe that the some what original form of this title is what is calling the attention of my viewer the most. The final image that i attract the attention of audience with is the orange road markings that sit underneath the car of this image representing a road.

Design report.

My research on typography in horror posters revealed that most artists try to design there typeface’s in such a way that the title of these posters reflect the contents of the film, I have also learned that while doing this artists can create a piece of text to appear to be almost threatening an effect that usually occurs when the artist of a design fashions there texts having very jagged fetchers , sharp edges or in most cases resembling blood. While doing this section of research I also got the impression that crating a text in the form of blood is now considered to be a rather outdated and some-what cliche design.

The majority of my first attempts of re-creating typefaces for horror films typography designs in my opinion were not successful this was due to the fact that I thought them to be to technical, so I decided to continue developing my work while trying to simplify my new designs. I then came across Saul bass’s Hitchcock typeface and admired the design of this type there for began to create my text under the influence of his typography. The final out-comes of this experimentation I thought were very good and so decided to incorporate it in to one off my final posters.  I believe that the development that I have shown on my blog show my style becoming less complex and involving less detail however continue to look more refined and bolder

The research that I undertook in finding very successful and well-known horror posters reviled the ways in which to use the rule of thirds and the various ways that one can crate a main focal point, of which explained that main focal points become effective through having bold contrasting colours and also through strategic positioning. I came across many examples of the ways that positioning can help create a main focal point all of which mainly placed there image within the most commonly focused on section of a poster that being the section where a pair of human eyes would appear if the poster was divided in to sections for a humans face this section can be found taking place at the very bottom line of the highest section in the rule of thirds. I also found that the posters with the most limited colour scheme seamed to be more effective than those with a wider range of colours I think that this was due to the fact that the more limited the colour scheme was the less attention was detracted away from the overall design allowing me to analyse the posters faster. While  studying these posters I also found that all these posters had used very iconic images that were intrinsically linked to there chosen posters an example of this can be seen in the use of a image of a shark in the jaw’s movie poster.

Having found this I chose four objects of which were very strongly linked with the film zombie land of which were images of the car they travel in ,the fairest wheel and the shoot a duck game from the fair ground that they reach, silhouettes of zombies as they fight them though out this film and finally a form of fair-ground advertisement that is interchangeable but originally I have chosen a brightly lit arrow sign.

I then went on to design my own poster designs of which I felt all had potential. However, I thought that only 6 of them could look somewhat professional after testing them out I found that the first design I re-created was the worst ,this is the design that shows a zombie in the back seat, of which did not prove to be as successful as I had planned as the positioning and colour scheme of this poster did not work there for I made sure that the second design would show good composition and colour scheme that being the design that displays imagery of a car with its door hitting a zombie in the head , I feel that my technique had greatly improved as in this design. I had managed to successfully integrate the imagery together. I then continued to improve while adding less imagery and adding more detail to individual images. The development of this particular design finally led to the creation of one of my final posters. The third design idea I had decided to re- create in illustrator was my zombie clown design in which I designed to resemble an old fashion clown carnival poster. Again showing  improvement by becoming more vibrant in colour and more detailed making the over all poster very eye catching and bold, I have designed this poster having its title travelling down the left hand side of the poster and displays a image of a zombie clown face of which I have designed to appear as if it is scowling at my audience a characteristic of which I believe instigates a emotional response, a fetcher of which is missing from my various other posters and because of these facts I have also chosen this poster as one of my final pieces.

I believe that my final posters meets the brief as I feel that I have successfully re-created the style of Saul bass through my limited but effective colour schemes and also though my irregular typeface I have also made sure to not include harsh black outlines. Another reason I believe that I have hit the criteria is due to the fact that I have used images that are intrinsically linked my chosen film and these images also well explain the contents of this film to viewers that have not yet seen this film. Further more I feel that I have expressed my knowledge of the pen tool through these images by incorporating a lot of hand drawn styled detail to these posters.

if i were to do this task over again i would now crate a bolder typeface for my titles as i feel that the clown posters type face is not very effective as the black colour of its characters merge in to the border of the poster to much i would also further simplify my imagery. i would have also researched some more posters of which were closer to the styling of Saul bass.
