zebra stripes
here i have found some zebra patterns from the internet that i edited using photoshop first using the magic wand tool to select and remove particular sections of this pattern with to create a wave-like zebra pattern design that i then changed the colour of specific sections of using the paint bucket tool. i created this specific design for the black history month poems that i was given as my research showed that the majority of the historical characters that are mentioned in this particular poem were originally from Africa while mary sea cole was Jamaican. which inspired me to incorporate a Jamaican flower into my design which did not end up being as sucsessfull as this pattern.  once i was happy with my pattern i then began to place it on to my poem in various different ways all while keeping this pattern at a very low opacity in order to allow the poem its self to stay visible.
bmh collage
here i have designed a collage of the historical characters that were spoken about within the content of the black history poem i was given. i created this in photoshop first using the direct selection tool on the high-quality images while using the quick masking tools of other low quality or more complicated images both methods of which allowed me to effectively remove the background of the original images. once i had removed the images from there backgrounds I then adjusted the colour of all these images changing pictures in colour to black and white using the black and white adjustment tool. i then edited the hu saturation off these pictures in order to cause the images to blend well together in order to cause the images to appear to blend well together after i had integrated them into one another.

black history month
This is an image of my first design which i felt was not professional enough as the opacity of my African zebra pattern in the background was too high causing the text to be unreadable. i also felt that the design was to busy and did not blend well enough.

army mass heads

jordan-peele-rs-cover
I believe that this rolling stones magazine’s masthead is effective due to the fact that its striking red colour well replicates rolling stones original typeface for there mastheads while also effectively capturing its audience’s attention through the strong amount of contrast that can be seen occurring between the black and white background and the cherry red colour belonging to this typeface. I presume that it is this fact that has caused the masthead to act as the second main focal point of this magazine due to it possessing the only shade of colour presented on this magazine cover.
I believe that the artist of this masthead for this particular rolling stones magazine has designed a slight tear taking place in letter g of the typeface as to express the stressful ways belonging to the main topic for this magazine that being Jordan Peele’s story of which this front cover describes as terrifying yet triumphant.
Another characteristic in which I believe has caused this masthead to be successful is due to the fact that this typeface has been designed to be large and also can be seen stretching across the majority of the space at the top of this magazine. I also feel that the artist of this typeface has placed it in its best position possible of which happens to be just above the main focal point of which is the males face, a style choice of which I think is effective due to the fact that having the text in this position allows the main focal point of this magazine to be observed without any distraction being caused by the typeface and its strong contrasting colour, enabling the viewer to pay close attention to the subtly sad yet serious expression that is taking place in Jordan peeles face. An effect which I feel has been exaggerated through the artists use of the lack of colour as by having the main colour scheme of this cover black and white allows the audience to not be distracted by the colour of the image and can instead focus on its context.
I believe that this typeface attracts all genders due to its unisex design and colour while also attracting music fans that favour rock music in particular due to this mastheads typeface being informal and artistic displaying an excessive amount of exaggerated curves and serifs that can be seen leading in to slight curls that I believe well reflect the informal styling of rock music while the striking red colour well expresses the loudness belonging to the music genre of frock and role.

The first thing I notice about this magazines masthead is its typeface’s very clear contrast in thickness possessing extremely thin characteristics that exaggerate the somewhat proportionally correct aspects of this text. I believe that these characteristic causes its audience to study the text for a longer amount of time. As well as this I also feel that its slightly elongated composition causes this typeface to look sophisticated and draws in more attention to the masthead while mirroring the long stylings of the arm belonging to the model on this front cover. Another reason why this masthead is successful is because of the way it well illustrates the meaning of the word bazaar doing so through its irregular positioning occurring in the third letter A in this text that can be seen venturing slightly lower than the rest of the letters belonging to the masthead. This typefaces black colour also works well with the minimal colour scheme of this magazine cover and contrasts well against the off white colour of the background. I also feel that the sophisticated elongated styling of this typeface effectively appeals to its target audience of fashion orientated women between the ages of 25 to 49 well through its black colour which is the colour well known in the fashion world to never go out of style and its sophisticated and elongated stylings.

magazine-cover-art-01
I believe the masthead for this magazine to be very successful due to its somewhat original and informal typeface that presents its audience with a very curved style that is also slightly elongated as I feel that these uncommon characteristics Interreg its audience. I also am very fond of the way in which the designer of this typeface has well explained the meaning of the word complexes in a subtle way using intersecting lines to decorate this masthead well expressing the way in which things that are complexes can be confusing just as it would be to follow the true directions of these lines due to their integrated design. as well as this the dominant white colour of this typeface well integrates with the black and white colour scheme of this  magazine cover
s-l300
I have chosen this image as I believe it to have a very successful masthead. I have this opinion as I feel that the formal style of this mast heads typeface allows the viewer to retrieve the information in a very quick amount f time while the capital lettering translates a sense of urgency that causes the text to make a stronger impression and may cause the viewers to pick this magazine. i have also noticed the way in which the artist of this magazine has designed this text in a golden colour which I believe has been done in order to express the context of this particular magazine that of which appears to be about the tombs of Egypt witch are well known to hold excessive amounts of gold while also blending in with the  golden Egyptian statue that can be seen on the front cover of this magazine. another reason why I think that this masthead works so well is because of the fact that the text of this heading has been designed to look as though it is slightly fading in to the black background as it is this characteristic which allows the main focal point of this magazine cover to stand out as well as it can as the fades effect does not distract the viewer’s attention away from more important imagery. This style choice could be considered a bad trait for magazine brands that are not as well known but because the national geographic magazine is so well known this company can do this without any issues. This typeface also works well for this magazine as this text is clear and fast informing and I think that this well implies to the viewer this magazine is educational and trying to attract a sophisticated and mature audience.
Ahead-of-50th-Anniversary-Rolling-Stone-Magazine-Goes-Up-For-Sale-.jpg
The first thing I notice about this masthead is how informal and somewhat unclear it is. However even so this typeface is not as clear as many other rolling stones magazines have been I still believe it to be successful firstly due to the fact that the blurred vintage style of the characters of this typeface well integrated with the black and white image of Jimi Hendrix that is displayed on the front cover of this magazine as this characteristic causes the masthead to appear to be a part of this piece of artwork taking place on this magazine. the dusty design of this heading would more than immediately be labelled as an unwanted quality if this magazine were not so well known but due to the rolling stones magazine band being internationally known this uncommon design choice works well and can be appreciated as being something unique. I feel that this design well expresses the context of this magazine well as its main focal point that being the face of jimmy Hendrix as this musician is known for his innovative music style that I think the artist has tried to reflect through the use of this somewhat risky masthead.

8b32241613daa17b2976a5149113b957.jpg
I believe that this magazine has a very successful masthead because I feel that the white colour and somewhat simple styling of this typeface against this magazine’s very busy background cause this text to stand out a great deal better than if the designer of this typeface had chosen to incorporate a colour or any pattern. I have also noticed the small amount of contrast in thickness that the artist has created in the letters form having some aspects of this text being very thin while the majority of the body of this text is in proportion to the size of this masthead a design choice which I think ads a subtle amount of artistic flair while keeping the text sophisticated. The positioning  of this  typeface has also caused the masthead to act as the main focal point attracting attention from the array of colours taking place in the flowers in the background a characteristic that would not be taking place if this masthead was not placed in this very colourful section of the background  due to this typeface sharing the same white colour as the bottom half of this magazine cover.
1298354801_soldier
From my perspective, this magazine has a very successful masthead as I feel that the typeface its self is very bold and striking due to its large sizing and thick design that has also been given a dark green colour. characteristics that together cause the typeface to stand out so well against the background that it causes the text to act as the main focal point. while the dark green colour also blends well with the traditional army colours belonging to the background. I also think that the bold stylings of this masthead well creates a sense of urgency to its viewer that suggests to the reader that being a soldier is an important role. As well as this I think that the positioning of this masthead is very appropriate as by having it at the very top  stretching across from the left corner to the other helps stress the matter of importance as without these design choices  I don’t think that the heading would still act as the main focal point, for example if this masthead was designed smaller and was placed in the left-hand corner of this magazine, not overlapping the image of the solder I believe that it would be the face of this image that would then act as the main focal point and the lasting impression of this magazines brand would not be as effective.
OFC_Oct
I believe that the masthead for this magazine is effective firstly due to its bright red colour that contrasts very well against the darkly coloured background  and large sizing of the capital letters used to create this heading as I think that these characteristics express a sense of urgency that is so attention-grabbing that it  caused the banner to act as the main focal point. Another reason why I find this banner successful is because of the way in which the design of this typeface well expresses the ventures meaning behind the word pioneer doing so through the use of the extension of the second letter E’s middle line that can be seen conjoining with the third letter.

SOLDIER-MONTHLY_DEC-18
The first thing I notice about this masthead is the silhouette design of its typeface, a characteristic I think is unique and interesting i suspect that the artist of this design has chosen to do this as to allow more imagery and detail to take place in this magazine design. I also like the way in which this design is minimal yet still so attention-grabbing that the banner still acts as the main focal point. An effect I think maybe due to the strong contrast that the white colour of the lines for the text has against the dark coloured background. I am also fond of the way that even though the outlines of this typeface are thin the letters are still very large and fill up the top section of this page.
cover_march2014
This magazine covers masthead is effective firstly because of the bright red colour of the typeface which contrasts really well with the grey colours taking place in the background as this design choice causes the typeface to jump out at the viewer. Another reason I believe that this masthead is effective is due to the way that the artist of this text has chosen to create this banner using capital letters which combined with the red colour express a sense of urgency to its viewer. I have also noticed the thin style of this text and suspect that the designer of this magazine has chosen to make the banner in this way as to allow the background image to be as visible as possible. i also suspect that the text of the banner of this magazine has been given this red colour to address the dangerous context belonging to the image of the male holding the larg gun on this front cover.
images
I feel that this magazines masthead is effective firstly due to its top lines bold design that has been achieved through the use of its large seizing and its capital letters that combined with the bright red colour conveys a sense of urgency and perhaps danger. I also admire the way that the artist of this design as expressed the meaning of the word combat by adding a picture of a target that can be seen taking place in the letter o of this word. The second line of this masthead also does this through the use of the black plus sign as this symbol is well known to appear on the front of first add kits which I believe well explains the word survival while also meaning the word and. I suspect that the artist of this masthead has designed the word survival in this thin way as to suggest that the changes of survival in the stories in this magazine are slim while creating a noticeable amount of contrast in this banner in thickness and colour. The positioning of this banner works well as having it taking place in this white section of this magazine as it causes the masthead to act as the main focal point because I think that if this white section were not there the main focal point would be the image of the solder.
the-soldier-magazine
This mastheads typeface is rather unique to other army magazines I have looked at as the typeface used looks somewhat elegant an effect, I believe has been created through the use of lowercase letters as this does not suggest a sense of urgency but rather calmness, unlike many army magazines. To add to this the colour of the typeface that reads the word solder has also been created in an off white colour which in my opinion suggests that the contents of this magazine are not action-filled but instead educational as this typeface is easily read and is not stirring in any manner. While the yellow coloured text in this masthead well coincides with the yellow and green colour scheme of this magazine cover.
1101111121_400
This magazine masthead is effective as its bright red colour contrasts well against the gey green and white colour of this background which combined with the use of the colour red well expresses the dangerous life a soldier while also causing the text to grab the attention of its viewer. Another reason why I believe that this banner is successful is due to the way that it acts as the main focal point that after viewed allows the eye to get dragged down the page while reading the rest of the text.

OMS30527-MZ
This masthead is very effective firstly because of the dark blue colour of the typeface which blends well with the lighter colour blue water in this magazine while also suggesting to the viewer that the solders stories contain a lot of information about his time spent at sea. The capital letters o typeface also express a sense of urgency that has been made slightly more subtle due to its size somewhat small size that I believe has been done in order to allow the image of the solder to be the main focal point rather than the masthead. i also suspect that the text of this banner has been designed in the colour blue to suggest the possibility of the content of this solders.

This is a picture of the various different typefaces i will look to base my  masthead designs of. i have chosen many of these designs for possessing string tyoeface designs while also looking original and attention grabbing. i also have chosen these bold typefaces as i believe that the thick structures of the indiculal characters will complement the contrasts in colour i intend to create. i am most fond of the typeface i have placed at the  very bottom of these typefaces  while i also like the typeface that i have placed in the top left-hand corner amongst these designs which looks similar to the bottom right hang typeface  that  can be seen taking place just above the typeface earlier mentioned that sits as the very bottom of this image  and will look to design my typefaces mimicking these typefaces.

march experiments pj.jpg
These eight designs have been made using already existing characters which I have experimented with practising different aligning methods that  did by merging the aligning characters belonging to these mastheads  an example of this can be seen taking place in the top right masthead design in the way in which i have conjoined the letter w from the word forward  and the letter M  in the word march.  i believe that by practising this styling technique has caused these designs to look somewhat complex and thought about into greater depth.  i have also begun to attempt to create clear contrast doing so by using colours that are vastly different that also complement each other in the makings of my typefaces. i have also created many different ways of displaying my mastheads by adding large rectangles that posses bold colours that i have placed in the backgrounds of these masthead designs that i have included as i felt that these rectangles caused my mats heads to stand out more while also contributing to the amount of contrast created.  i have decided that the most successful designs amongst these masthead examples is the second to bottom masthead that sits in the lower right-hand corner . as i believe that this masthead design looks the most professional. i also think that the very bottom  typeface is of good quality as i think that this masthead looks futuristic and possesses a sophisticated  colour scheme.

this is an image of which shows the various different masthead designs that i have created, using different fonts in which i changed doing so by distorting certain aspects of the original typefaces while also experimenting with different colour combinations . for this task i used five styles of typefaces using a type called personal progress, miamogon, call of black ops,  absolute zero and press style  while experimenting with these typefaces i discovered that the typeface called progress was very  versatile and allowed me to create many different masthead designs . i believe this was due to the simple styling of this typefaces original design.
just collage.jpg
this is an image of a collage i have made in order to explain the topic of my chosen magazine. i feel i have done this by using an image of a black model wearing the well-known clothing and moustache originally belonging to field marshal lord kitchene from the most famous ww1 British propaganda poster that was created in 1914. I have done this in order to illustrate the fact that all races and women are now allowed to join the army free from ridicule while also placing the LGBT flag on the cheeks of the model to represent the fact that the British army has now passed a law allowing persons from the LGBT community to also join the army.

five mags with arrows pic
This is an image of the many different magazine cover designs in which i have tested one of my chosen masthead ideas. I believe these examples are all very successful and eye-catching. out of these five magazine covers, i feel that the most successful magazine cover is the cover which displays an image of a female soldier wearing an army barra, while a simple text on the right-hand side of this mage reads “why not you?” I believe that the simple green, blue and black colour scheme that i have created and included in the masthead looks somewhat professional  and i think that the central positioning within  the top section of the masthead works better than any other mastheads in these designs as this positioning causes this typeface to capture the  attention of my audience before any other imagery in this picture a characteristic i think  may also be  due to my use on white space and contrasting colours.
five mags extended m pic
Here are five images of various different magazine covers that i have designed to display this particular masthead which i have chosen to possibly take part in my final cover. out of these designs, i believe the bottom right design that displays an image of a metallic statue presents my masthead well and i feel that this is due to the black and white colour of this cover as i feel that this simplistic colour scheme causes the most contrast., particularly in the masthead of this magazine cover.  I have also noticed that this magazine cover is the first to capture my attention through the masthead before any other images in this picture. having realised these facts i will look to re-create this high contrasting, simplistic colour scheme in my final magazine cover in hopes to recreate this attention-grabbing effect.

FIVE MAGS WITH DOUBLE W.jpg
This is an image of five magazine cover examples that i have designed in order to display my chosen masthead. i believe that the most successful magazine cover example amongst these designs is the top middle design which shows an image of two female soldiers that i have edited to look a grey like green colour. i have this opinion as i think that the positioning of my masthead has been placed well as i think that having the masthead in the top centre of this front cover causes my masthead to act as the main focal point as i think that having it in this position which makes the most of the third of this magazine expresses a matter of importance as opposed to if this masthead were placed within the bottom  third of this magazine cover   a characteristic i am looking to create in my final magazine cover.  I also think that this example is successful because of the way i have kept a simple colour scheme of green and black throughout the makings of this cover as i think that this creates a stronger contrast.
further deleloped mast head-01.jpg
This is an image of ten further developed masthead designs i have created due to the fact i felt that my previous designs were lacking in artistic flare and did not explain the topic of my magazine well enough. within these designs, i have added an image of a  circle possessing two arrows pointing the left hnd side. i have done this in order to resemble the well known fast forward image that can be commonly found on tv remotes. this was due to the fact that i believe this symbol well expressed the meaning behind my magazine cover and was an image that was going to be well received by my audience due to its well-established meaning.  i have also attempted to create stronger contrast in colour in my designs as i intend to create my masthead to act as the main focal point.
Untitled-1.jpg
I have chosen this masthead to take place of my final magazine cover as i believe that i have expresses the topic of my magien very well through the use of my fast forward button symbol that i have placed to act as the letter O  belonging to the word forward. as i think that this symbol well expresses the ides of moving in a  forward direction. I  have also included rainbow colours the create a ring around the fast forward symbol in order to address the fact that the British army has now made it legal to be an LGBT member and join the armed forces. i have placed it in this particular image in my masthead as this symbol acts as the main focal point as i believed that doing this would allow my audience to retrieve the most information in the shortest amount of time before reading the context of my masthead. as well as this i think that my incorporation of these colours contrasts well against the dominantly black and white colour scheme in this masthead.

daniel-betchley-dps
The first thing that my eye is drawn to on this double-page spread is the image of musician Daniel Bletchley who can be seen having a slightly concerned look on his face subtly suggesting to the viewer that the information on this double-page spread contains stories that may be slightly concerning while also wearing a microphone on his left shoulder a characteristic I believe has been added to indicate to the viewers that the person in this image is a musician while also translating the fact that this biography is based on his confessions. The second focal point of this magazine is the heading which tells the viewer about the secret revealing content of this biography which I believe has been well reflected through the design belonging to the typeface of this headline as I feel that its slanted positioning and informal curved styling create a flow effect which reminds  me of styling of poetry while also reflecting the rhythm in music. after reading this heading my eye is then drawn very quickly down the page following the stem belonging to the large red letter D that has been placed behind the text which I suspect has been incorporated in this particular way as to express importance through the large size and red colour of this letter while also presenting the viewer with the first letter of this artists name. The stem of this letter D also draws my attention to the autobiography section of this double-page spread which once acknowledged allows my eye to then read the contents of this page.

sweaping statment.jpg
The main focal point of this double-page spread it the very large image of the distorted looking Stairs that can be seen taking place on the left page which can also be seen taking place on the bottom left of the right hand page of which is an image of a section of the banister which well expresses expressed the word sweeping belonging to the heading as people are well known to glide or sweep their hands along banister. This image captors my eye at the top left hand of the page and guides my eye downwards across the left-hand side of this page and then over to the right page in one fluid u shaped position. after this, my attention is then caught with the heading of this magazine which has been designed in a somewhat formal text that is easy to read and possessed a simple style a characteristic I believe has been made to express the word statement a subject which usually has a simple and straight forward context. The third focal point is the subheading that can be seen sitting just under the heading which again is again in a very simple and form text allowing the viewer to retrieve the most information in a very quick amount of time a characteristic I will look to re-create as this may cause the reader to not lose interest in this article. The forth eria of focus is the very large letter w that draws the viewers eye downwards towards the main text of this magazine and finally towards the small section of text at the very bottom right-hand corner of this page.
Dont let them grow up .png
The main focal point of this magazine is the heading of this magazine this id due to the very larger size of the letters of this typeface and the way in which this heading stretches from corner to corner demanding attention from its viewer, another reason why this masthead is the main focal point if because of the bright mustard yellow colour as this colour created a lot of contrasts against the grey-white space on these two pages while also translating the worrying context of this heading this is due to the fact that society uses the colour yellow to symbolise warnings . The second focal point of this magazine is the subheading which reads a disturbing lack of play. I believe that this is due to the informal design of this typeface as the stems of the letters stretch upwards towards the main focal point which causes the viewer’s attention to be drawn to this subheading before any of the other imagery or text. Once I have read this sun heading my eye is then again drawn downwards along the page towards the large image of the child’s bear that well explains the meaning behind the heading and subheadings the brown colour of the bear also well compliments the yellow colour of the heading of this magazine cover. once the image of the bear has been studied the large letter I on the left hand side of the middle section of this double-page spread captures my attention with its large sizing and yellow colour this characteristic entices the viewer to read the text on the left-hand side first which is then shortly followed by the right-hand side text which call attention through a small about of text that has bee given the same mustard yellow colour given to the focal points throughout the design of this magazine.
modern
The main focal point of this magazine is the heading which captures the attention of the audience through its intercut design which possesses many different colours which I believe keeps the reader interested, while also causing strong amounts of contrast through these different colours  and the large amount of the colour black that is used as this contrasts very well against the white background. I also believe that the design of this typeface is very successful as it well translated the meaning behind this heading which reads the words modern manners as this typography has been designed having various different images of new aged technology which can be seen making up the majority of the body of this typeface. The second focal point of this magazine is te subheading of this magazine which attracts the attention of its viewer through its large capital lettering which I feel expresses a sense of urgency influencing the viewer to instantly read this subheading before any other imagery or information. As well as this I think that the dark grey colour of this text works well  due its shade of colour being slightly lighter that the heading and this allows the main heading to be read before the subheading .as I suspect that if the dark grey of the subheading were instead a dark black that it would distract the viewers’ attention away from the intended main focal point having them instead be drawn to the subheading first. The third area of focus Is the bold black text which draws my attention in through its thickness and very dark colour. Ones I had read this text my eye then follows the text downwards towards a text which has again been given the same bold and dark design . after the text on the left of the right-hand page has been read I am then allowed to read the text on the bottom right hand side of this page which has been designed very small yet in a dark colour characteristics I assume have been given to this section of text as to not distract its viewer away from the left to right flow that the designer of this double-page spread has created.
VRLT-Soldier-Magazine-1108x698
The main focal point of this double-page spread is the heading which captures my attention before any other imagery due to its large, elongated size which has been given two colours black and a light blue. Both colours which create a noticeable amount of contrasts against the with space pf this magazine I also believe that the designer of this magazine had made the moats of the space given for the heading doing so by designing the typeface in this very elongated fashion which also spreads across both pages of the double-page spread a characteristic which I feel expresses a sense of importance and urgency well without using extrema colours to catch the viewers’ attention
The second focal point of this magazine is the image of the hands holding a controller in the top left-hand side of this magazine which draws in attention after the main focal point through its less limited colour scheme showing various different colours. This image has been designed at a downward-facing diagonal which guides the viewers’ attention in this direction which almost appears to be pointing towards the subheading which I feel has been given a somewhat unique design as it possesses a very thin and small typeface which would not work well without the bold pink outlining of this subheading. I also think that the positioning of this subheading is successful due to the way in which the designer of this text had placed it just under the word future evenly stretching from the letter F to the second U as this causes the magazine to look better organized and professional. After I have read the subheading I am then made to look at the large blue letter R that can be seen taking place under the subheading which stands out well against the large use of the colour white in this magazine white the thin formal style indicated that the text beside this letter is full of information. This letter r causes the viewer to then read all of the information given which drags the viewers eye across to the right hand side of the page towards the blue typeface which keeps the reader interested in the information and causing them to thoroughly read the text without being distracted by the two images on the right-hand side of this page which are both viewed last.
Army_publication_voted_best_UK_internal_magazine2
The main focal point of this double-page spread is the heading which reads homegrown heroes that have been given a rather dark blue colour which stands out very well against the light blue background, I also notice that the typeface used is rather formal while possessing a strong structure  style choices which I believe well expresses the idea of a refined and discipline solder. The second focal point of this double-page spread is the subheading of this magazine which has been given a very dark colour which creates a stronger amount of contrast than the dark blue belonging to the heading but due to its significantly smaller size, this allows the main heading to be more eye-catching than the subheading. Once I have read the headings my eye is then drawn down the page towards the two soldiers that stand out before the text because of the way in which the designer has chosen to mould the main text to outline these images as opposed to if the designer had not done this as if the text were to run in front of these images the text would act as the third era of focus rather than these two images. After I have looked at these images I am then influenced to read the main text of the left-hand page through the use of the large, dark blue capital letter which works well due to its large size which causes this letter to look almost misplaced and I think that it is this difference in size which draws in attention. After the text has been read the very large image of the two soldiers looking through what appears to be a metal detector demands my attention through its very large size and framing technique which has created a very interesting image. Shortly after viewing this image my attention is caught by the small writing at the top of this page once read the reader is then made to follow the images given to this page that travel in a line down the page guiding you to then read the last section of text.
1970s-uk-wrac-magazine-advert-exrcn2.jpg
The heading of this double-page spread acts as the main focal point and has been given a very simple and formal design that has been designed to travelling from top corner to corner. This typeface is successful as it is clear, bold and its black colour creates a strong amount of contrast against the cream white space of this magazine. the second focal point of this magazine is the large photograph of the smiling female soldier who I feel puts confidence in this magazine’s female audience. Once I have looked at this image my attention is then called to read the main text which after reading, I am then allowed to look at the large black writing in the right-hand corner of this magazine. this magazine has been given a very simple right to left flow which I believe is very functional and easy to follow and enables the reader to focus on the context of this magazine. this design also suggests that it is the content that is the most important factor belonging to this double-page spread.
design woman
Here i have designed many different headings for my article titled “Could women make the army stronger”. throughout the makings of these designs, I have managed to incorporate the female symbol doing so by conjoining the base letter O from the word woman and the top section of the letter T  from the word stronger. I believe by doing this i have successfully expressed the meaning behind my heading. while also attracting the attention of my viewer through this symbol, which i have created using colours that contrast against these individual colour scheme in order to make this feminine symbol the main focal point of my text well suggesting that the contents of this article is based on females.  i have also used colours which are known to be stereotypical females such as dark pinks and purples and cherry reds all colours which i have created contrast in colour through my use of black.  These typefaces were crated on illustrator using already existing typefaces in which i have distorted and transformed using the pen tool, the resizing tools and the paint bucket tools.

This is an image of the four heading designs in which i have liked the most out of the many designs i had made i have chosen these five designs as i believe that they are all original and artistic. for example, i think that the heading at the top of my image has unique and subtle characteristics shown in the overextension of the leg belonging to letter r that is placed in the word stronger which drags our eye to look at the letter o that is significantly smaller. i felt that these characteristics well complimented my incorporation of the female symbol. in the second heading on this page i decided to distort the letter t and o even further but felt that by doing this and incorporating underlinings caused this design to look too busy there  for i tested out a thinner typeface while also incorporating a stronger contrast in size doing so by using extremely thin typefaces that i set beside a rather normal-sized typeface/. i believe that this has resulted in a stronger looking contrast in colour and the irregular sizing of this typeface well frames one of the main topics of this heading that being the word woman. i have again attempted to create a design which frames the main topics of my heading of which is the word women and stronger. i did this by again using a clear contrast in size but this time ensuring that this variation in size was not so extream.  the last typeface on this page is a second version of the third heading what i have created a double outlining ton the thin typefaces and have also made bigger while elongating the signature looking text as i felt by doing this created a bigger impact.
final headding could
This is an image of my chosen heading for my first article. I have chosen this heading as i believe that it shows a strong amount of contrast that i have created by using bold colours that i think stand out well amongst any imagery. i also believe that the colour i have used for the female symbol for this typeface causes this aspect of my heading to be very visible insuring that my audience sees this symbol before reading the contents of my heading.

could women make strong
here i have taken five different headings that i have designed for my article titled “Could women make the army stronger”.For these examples, i have used an image of a young woman wearing army clothing and holding a gun to express the meaning of this heading.  out of these five examples, i am most fond of the very bottom right-hand picture due to the fact that i believe the heading that i have designed for this image stands out far better than any other  headings in these images an effect i believe exists due to the white and bright orange colour scheme i have given to my heading that  creates a very strong amount of contrast. however, i do feel that the positioning of this heading is not very a prophet as having the heading at the bottom corner of this image does not suggest to my viewer that this heading is important.
woman solder heading
Here i have further developed my heading design for one of my chosen articles. i intend on using this design in one of my double-page spreads as i think that the red and white colour scheme i have given to my text both complement each other while creating a large amount of contrast. i also think that the position which i have placed the heading in suggests a sense of importance due to it being placed in the midsection of this image where i have also placed  my subheading taking place just underneath my main heading where it is easily visible. i also believe that the way that i have edited the image of the woman soldier in the background of this image in this grey colour allows the heading to act as the main focal point as the viewer’s attention is not pulled away by any background colour.

BRITISH CHANGE .jpg
in this image, you will see the many different heading designs which i have designed for my second article called “Changing the face of the British army”. while making these headings i have attempted to express the meaning behind this article doing so by creating these headings possessing artistic qualities which suggest the meanings behind the different words an example of this can be seen  in the way that i have incorporated the colours of the British flag i many of these designs while also  creating the cross that takes place in the British flag . i think that the best design out of these six headings is the  heading i have placed within a black rectangle as i believe that this design possesses the most contrast while the wave mark taking place as the bar in the letter H in the word change expresses the meaning behind this word well while the wat i have  designed the letter T that takes place in the word Britsh symbolises the cross in the British flag however i do believe that this cross is not visible enough there for i will look to change this during further development .
changing the face of heading
here i have further developed my erier chosen design for y heading.  while editing this typeface i have resized my text making it larger while changing the colour of my once blue and red cross to just a bright red colour which i believe makes this cross more visible through the better contrast in colour this red has created against the very dark black background.
CHANGING LIFT.jpg
through these four images, i have experimented using my headings. I have used this image f a woman exercising on a bar to try to suggest to my viewer that the new face of the British army could now be strong women.

collage heading
Here i have created my final heading design for my article titled changing the face of the British army. i have included a collage i had made earlier that i felt expressed the meaning of this heading well. i have chosen this design as i believe it is very artistic, eyecatching and original and i feel that this image could inspire minority groups to join the army.  another reason why i think that this design could act as my final heading is due to the clarity of my main heading which i think is professional looking yet simple.

MAGAZIEN WIDER

Design report.

For this task, I have chosen to design an army recruitment magazine advertising the fact that the British army has now made it legal for LGBT member to join the army while also encouraging other minority groups to apply.

I believe I have translated this topic well doing so through the name of my masthead which I have called forward march. A name I have given to this magazine because this sentence is a very well-known military command.  I also felt that this command addressed the forward-thinking ways of the new laws given to the British and I felt that the fact that this sentence is a command reflected the forceful ways of new laws.

Another way I think I have well expressed my chosen topic is through the fast forward symbol I have incorporated into my masthead that I have given a rainbow coloured outline as I think that this symbol expresses the word forward in my masthead. while the rainbow outlining addresses the LGBT community as the LGBT flag is one filled with rainbow colours.

I have designed my masthead having pointed serifs and a somewhat thick structure as I felt that these characteristics resulted in a strong looking typeface. as well as this I have elongated the letter f belonging to my masthead because I thought that this created a unique look and would intrigue my audience. This masthead has also been placed in the top third of my magazine cover as I felt that having this text at the very top of my magazine expressed a sense of importance while also allowing me to incorporate a lot of imagery underneath this typeface.  As well as this I also think that having my masthead in this position has enabled my masthead to act as my main focal point an effect I believe would have not been possible if this title were placed in any other position.

The image of the black female solder that I have used as my main image for my magazine cover was included due to the fact that I felt that the image would effectively remind my audience that women and people of any ethnicity have been able to join the army for a lengthy amount of time addressing older changed in the army’s laws. Just behind this image, I have again included the LGBT flag that I have designed to act as the main source of colour for this magazine cover.

I feel I have created a very strong contrast in colour in this magazine cover created through my somewhat limited colour scheme, using a lot of black and white throughout the majority of this front cover which I believe has effectively exaggerated the colourful ways of the rainbow imagery.

From my perspective, my first article titled Changing the face of the British army is successful as I believe that the collage I have made in illustrator explains the meaning of this heading doing so through the use of my image of a black female that i have painted the LGBT flag upon her face. This image of the woman can also be seen wearing the hat and moustache belonging to the very famous 1914 British lord Kitchener propaganda poster. This face is also mounted on a piece of newspaper with storm clouds taking place in the background. I have created this collage in this way to suggest to my viewer that women, people of different ethnicities and different sexual orientations can now be considered to be the new faces of the British army. I had also made this collage my main focal point as I thought that this image was suggestive enough to give my viewer an idea of the topic of the article that they are about to read.

After my viewer has studied my collage u then guide there eye Just underneath this collage where I have designed my heading which I have placed within a rectangle that can be seen stretching across the page entering the second page which also has my earlier made fast forward symbol occurring at the very end of this rectangle. I have designed my heading in this way because I thought that having my heading in this large black rectangle would attract attention while the black colour would create a large amount of contrast accruing in the white colour of the text and the white background. The fast forward symbol that I have placed at the end of this rectangle has been added to remind my audience of the progress that the British army is making. While also guiding my viewer’s eye across the page encouraging them to later read the text on the right.

My third focal point of this double-page spread is The subheading of this article  that can be seen taking place at the very bottom on the left hand page In small black writing that I have set to a bold text as an attempt to suggest a matter of importance and causing the text to remain visible while being this size.

Once this page has been viewed, I then capture my viewers’ attention with the use of an initial through its large size and bright red colour, This drop cap instructs my viewer to read this first paragraph before any other texts on this page. I then use the headings of my paragraphs to draw my viewers eye down the page reading the sections of this article in order .doing so by having these heading in capital letters that I have also placed above the individual paragraphs in order to inform my reader of the contents that they are about to read beforehand while also keeping them  interested.

Within these paragraphs, just under this sub-heading I have included images of the people that the different paragraphs are referring to. I have done this to allow the information of these paragraph to seam more personalised to these people while also showing the ordinary faces of these individuals explaining to my viewer that people from these minority groups are no different than the average person. These images also compliment the colour scheme which I have designed to show the colours black and red more frequently than other colours. A colour scheme I have chosen due to the well-known fact that the colour red can symbolise a sense of errancy and in some cases danger and it is because of this that I believed that this colour would demand the most attention from my viewers which I felt would be exaggerated by the strong contrast that the colour black creates when placed next to this colour.  Throughout this double-page spread, I have created a design that continually guides the attention of my viewer from the top of the page to the bottom. I have done this as I felt that this structure caused my content to be viewed in a very organized pattern while that works so fluently that it almost occurs unnoticed.

While making my second article I chose to design my main focal point to be the black and white image of the female soldier holding a gun. I have used an image of a female soldier in particular as an attempt to suggest to my viewer that the article that they are about to read is based around the concept of being a female soldier.

After my main focal point has taken effect the attention of my reader is then captured through the use of my heading which I have placed under the shoulders of the image of the female soldier as I felt that this position was the most appropriate as placing it here provided a lot of contrast while not  detracting attention away from my main focal point. Another reason why I am pleased with my heading is because I think that the way that I have designed the letter o belonging to the word women in my heading and the letter t in the word stronger to create the female symbol is a very expressive design while also looking aesthetically pleasing. Just underneath this heading, I have placed my subheading. I have placed it just underneath the main heading to avoid any confusion as to what this text is while also designing it in the colour white in order to cause the text to stand out to my reader through its strong contrast in colour.

I then guide the viewer’s eye across to the second page belonging to my double-page spread with the use of a drop cap which u have designed having a bright red colour, a technique which I had used earlier in my first article. This letter instructs my viewer to begin reading the contents of this article which after their focus is then made to look at the script typeface that I have placed at the bottom left-hand corner of this page just covering an image of two female solders of whom one is holding a gun. i had designs the word strong in this script typeface as its informal and handwritten design resembles the handwriting often seen in signatures and I thought that having this text slightly overlapping this image would create the elution that this picture has been signed by women themselves.
